THE
OKLAHOMA STATE FRATERNAL ORDER OF POLICE AUXILIARY.
Oklahoma Law Enforcement
Families Actively Supporting
Oklahoma’s
Law Enforcement
Membership
Membership eligibility that
originally allowed only females as members has been extended to include all
family members (18 years of age or over) of any member of the Fraternal Order
of Police. Even the name of the organization was changed to drop the word
“Ladies”. The Oklahoma Fraternal Order of Police Auxiliaries are an integral,
contributing extension of the F.O.P. and the organization is prepared to meet
the police family’s needs for the future.
History
The Fraternal Order of Police
Auxiliary is an ancillary organization of the Fraternal Order of Police, the
largest nationwide organization of law enforcement officers. The Auxiliary is
the only national support organization of its kind.
The first F.O.P. Ladies Auxiliary
was organized in 1920 in Pittsburgh, PA. Ladies Auxiliaries soon spread across
the nation. What slarted as a local police wife’s group has grown to a national
organization with over 5,000 members.
Concerns
of Police Survivors (COPS)
The Fraternal Order of Police Auxiliary was the catalyst in
forming the COPS organization. COPS assists survivors of officers killed in the
line of duty with grief seminars of various nature. COPS hosts a 2 day seminar
each year during Police Week in Washington DC.
The Oklahoma State F.O.P. Auxiliary
awards several $300 scholarships annually to a qualifying member of an F.O.P.
member. It is the concern of the State Auxiliary that our children are educated
and that is sometimes a financial struggle for law enforcement families. It is
also a concern that spouses be able to continue their education in order to
take some the financial burden from the shoulders of the police officer and
allow them to spend more time with their families. It is a well-known fact that
most law enforcement officers must work a second and sometimes third job to
support their famifles. It is the desire of the State F.O.P. Auxiliary to
continue awarding scholarships as long as there is a need and as long as
funding is available.
Charities
Although each subordinate Auxiliary
in Oklahoma has a favorite charity to which contributions are made, the
national charity for the Fraternal Order of Police and its Auxiliary is Easter
Seals. Each year the Auxiliary makes a substantial donation to Easter Seals at
the Telethon in Pasadena, CA.
Another charity supported at the
national level is Special Olympics. Many Auxiliaries are involved with Special
Olympics. Members work with the children during the games and host various fund
raising projects.
Battered Wives Shelters, homeless shelters, etc. are other
areas in which Auxiliaries give much needed support.
The National
Peace Officers Memorial Day
Service
In 1962, President John F. Kennedy proclaimed May
151h
as National Peace Officers Memorial
Day. It wasn’t until the F.O.P. Auxiliary sponsored and planned the First
National Peace Officer’s Memorial Day Service that any national effort was
exerted to remember the line-of-duty deaths inflicted on those who serve the
law enforcement profession. In 1982, at the first Annual Memorial Service held
in Washington DC, 125 people attended. Annual attendance now reaches 15-20,000.
The Auxiliary serves as the catalyst and organizer of the activity, but the
annual expense is funded by the Fraternal Order of Police.
-
Oklahoma State Peace Officers’
Memorial Service
The State Auxiliary is an advisory
member of the Oklahoma Law Enforcement Memorial Committee. Annually during
National Police Week, the week containing
May 15th,
members of the Oklahoma Law
Enforcement Memorial Committee host the Oklahoma State Peace Officers’ Memorial
Service at the Oklahoma State Memorial. The Memorial is located at
36th
and ML King Blvd. in
Oklahoma City. Law Enforcement officers killed in the line of duty in Oklahoma
are honored at this emotional service. Their names are engraved on the Memorial
to be remembered always.
The Fraternal Order of Police
Auxiliary promotes, encourages and educates our law enforcement officers about
gun safety through the Lock It Up Program. Educational films, brochures and
posters are distributed to law enforcement agencies. The Grand Lodge Auxiliary
provides the funding for the Lock It Up Program.
Legislative
F.O.P. Auxiliaries at the local,
State and National levels work in conjunction with the Grand Lodge Fraternal
Order of Police. To ensure passage of legislative issues concerning-Law
Enforcement officers. Letter writing campaigns and attending political events
are examples of how this is accomplished. Annually the Oklahoma Fraternal Order
of Police co-hosts a Legislative Reception to ~meet with and talk to area
legislators and representatives.

The Grand Lodge Auxiliary represents all State and
subordinate Auxiliaries. A State Auxiliary is comprised of all members of
subordinate auxiliaries within that particular State. Subordinate auxiliaries
are the most important in the Structure of the Auxiliary. A subordinate
auxiliary is formed with the permission of the parent F.O.P. Lodge with a
minimum of ten eligible persons. This grass roots organization administers to
the day-to-day problems of the members of the Fraternal Order of Police and
their families.
The profile of a subordinate
auxiliary varies with the needs of each particular police
-
family, law enforcement agency,
F.O.P. lodge and community. Auxiliaries represent diverse interests and makeup
of members. Our members are holding blood banks, car washes, dances, boat
rides, visiting hospitals, sponsoring athletic teams, providing grants to needy
students, walking the halls of Congress and State legislatures soliciting
support for police oriented legislation, and serve on critical response teams
within the law enforcement agencies
